Family Life and the Incarcerated

It's an unfortunate fact that, according to the latest Census, 10.4% of the entire African-American male population, ages 25-29 are incarcerated.  That's compared to 2.4% for Hispanic males, and 1.2% for white males.  In Virginia, as of 2008, 58.6% of the entire prison population consists of Black males.

What affect does this have on the Black family?  How are the women who are left behind able to keep the family intact?  How are they able to cope psychologically, socially and spiritually?  On the next Another View we'll talk about this critical issue with Reesy Floyd-Thompson, Director of Prisoners' Wives, Girlfriends and Partners; Claudia Williams, Social Worker with the Family Integration Program, Department of Human Services, Norfolk, and Dr. Sherry Daniels, Director of Lifeline Link Video Conferencing in Norfolk, an innovative program to keep families in touch with the incarcerated loved one.  Plus - beautiful portraits of beautiful women on the Peninsula - see the "Women of a New Tribe" exhibit.  It's all on Another View, Friday night at 9 on WHRO-TV, digital 15.1.

NSU 75th Anniversary

What started in 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University is now Norfolk State University - celebrating 75 years of quality education primarily for African American students.  Norfolk State University is on of the largest HBCU's in the country.  On this edition of Another View, we'll discuss the past, present and future of NSU with NSU Archivist Tommy Bogger, PhD, Gerald Tyler, NSU Reclamation Project Advisor, and Ed Hamm, Rector of the NSU Board of Visitors.  Plus, the story of Nat Turner as you've never heard it before.  It's all on Another View, Friday, February 19 at 9P on WHRO-TV, digital 15.1.

Interracial Marriage

African American "Firsts"

It's our first anniversary!  In celebration, we'll talk with prominent African Americans in Hampton Roads who were "first" in their fields.  How did they do it?  What special challenges did they face?  Our guests include Delceno Miles, the first African American to chair the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Board and owns the oldest minority-owned agency in Hampton Roads; Howard Gwynn, the first African American Commmonwealth's Attorney in Newport News; George Wallace, the first African American City Manager in Hampton; and Eileen A.
