Unemployment in the Hampton Roads African-American Community

Nationwide the unemployment rate this year is close to 7%, but in the African-American community it is above 12%! In Hampton Roads, white unemployment in 2008 was 3.4%, while African-American unemployment was 6.2%. Why are the numbers so high in our community? We'll talk about it with John Kamiru, Ph.D, Economist, Norfolk State University, Yvette Young, Vice President, Urban league of Hampton Roads, and Wil LaVeist, author of "Fired Up:How to Win When You Lose Your Job", on the next Another View, Thursday, February 26 at 9P on WHRO-DT 15.1. Prostate Cancer and African-American Men

If caught early, prostate cancer has a 90% cure rate – but it occurs more often and is more deadly in African-American men than any other race.  Why is this disease so prevalent among Black men?  We’ll explore the myths and the facts about prostate cancer with Charlie Hill, a prostate cancer survivor and President of the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum, and Mark Fleming, M.D., with the Virginia Oncology Associates on the next Another View, Thursday night at 9 on WHRO-DT 15.1.

Save Our Young Men

Five African-American student athletes have been murdered in the past year – all with promising futures.  Why?  What can we as a community do to keep our young men from experiencing violence?  We’ll take Another View of the issue as we talk with community leaders Elisha “Cadillac” Harris, Head Football Coach at Indian River H.S., Psychologist and Motivational Speaker Dr. Adolph Brown, and the Vice Mayor of Norfolk, Mr. Anthony Burfoot about ways to keep our young men safe.  Join us for Another View, Thursday, February 12 at 9P on WHRO-TV 15/digital 15.1.
